The N.M.C. holds another plan of this structure which bears the date 1737, hence the supplied date for this plan. This lighthouse was originally built from 1730 to 1733 but on 11 September 1736 the lantern was destroyed by fire. The new and fireproof lantern shown here was constructed on the older tower and began operation in July 1738. The original structure is reputed to be the first lighthouse in Canada and the second in North America.
