"The map shows by means of shading and line symbols the ancient limits of French claims in the Acadia area. Considered one of the French cartographers of the middle rank, Le Rouge appears to have done little that was original. This map is no exception. As stated in the title the base map is translated from Jefferys' "A new map of Nova Scotia and Cape Britain..." first published in May 1755. Le Rouge's map is faithful to the original with the only major departure to the original with the only major departue being the delineation of Isle St. Jean (Prince Edward Island) which is similar to Bellin. The "Table Comparative" whcih gives the latitude and longitudes of various locations as shown on the maps of other cartographers is copied from Jefferys': Explanation for the new map of Nova Scotia and Cape Britain London 1755 p. 22. The information concerning the ancient limits of Aadia is derived from the 1755 map "Carte d'une partie de l'Amérique Septentrionale..." which accompanied volume one of Mémoires des Commissaires du Roi. Paris 1755. This map, which has been identified as the first state, probably appeared in: Le Rouge's Atlas général ...[1741-62]. What has been identified as the second state of the map has its title somewhat altered to "Nouvelle Ecosse ou Partie Orientale du Canada" and Nouvelle Exosse has been printed across what is today New Brunswick. This later state usually appears on Le Rouge's Atlas Amériquain Septentrional...1778-[1792] (see note 4)."
