This building was commissioned and built by the provincial government. It was completed as a provincial building in 1868 andwas transferred to the federal government in 1871 for use as a post office and office building. There are four plans of the building. They are not the originals but rather were traced for inclusion in a letter to Hector Langevin, Minister of Public Works, in 1871. The federal government was at this time in the process of acquiring the building and the plans and letter detail various renovations and improvements required by the structure. The other three plans in the set have the same call number.
Documents relating to the structure can be found in R.G. 11, vols, 344-356, 561-562 and in R.G. 11, v. 3919. The plans themselves and the letter referred to in the map note are from R.G. 11, v. 347, item 18,919. This is one plan of a set of four for this building; all are H4/250/Halifax/[1871].
