The RCMP Service Registers (volumes 12810 -12844) contain information on former employees of the RCMP including regular members, Officers, Special constables, Chaplains, Appointments/Officer Status, Marine Constables, Reserve Constables and Civilian members. They are filed by regimental number. Some gaps in the numbers exist as a number of service registers were destroyed when the employee record was destroyed. These registers can include RCMP service information such as engagement date, postings, training, salary increases, promotions, offences (defaulter sheet) and struck-off-strength (SOS) date. Many contain personal information such as height, weight, eye colour, hair colour, distinguishing marks, country of birth, previous occupation, last residence, education, military service, marital status, number of children and date of death. It is speculated that information on these registers came from members' official service records.
Service registers are boxed numerically by category of employee and then regimental number in the following order: Regular members, Officers (O - #), Chaplains, Appointments Officer Status, special constables (SPL - #), Marine constables (M - #), Reserve constables (R - #), Special constables (S - #), and Civilians (C - #).
The RCMP Index Cards (volumes 12845-12907) consist of three sets of index cards which are less official in appearance than the service registers. Like the service registers they also contain information on former members of the RCMP. One set of index cards is filed by regimental number while the other two sets are filed alphabetically by members' surname. These cards contain various types of information such as engagement and discharge dates, promotions, home address, obituaries from various sources, and cross-references to obituaries found in "The Quarterly".
The two sets of index cards filed alphabetically have been boxed as two separate sets just as they were used. Please note, the same member's name may appear in both sets. The set of index cards filed by regimental number has been boxed numerically by category of employee and then regimental number in the following order: Officers, Special Constables, Reserves constables, Civilian Members, Old Series, New Series (often referred to as regular members).Additional information:Custodial history:The origin of these cards could not be determined. They have been in the custody of the RCMP Historical Section since as far back as the 1970's.
