The sub-sub-series consists of correspondence dealing with invitations regretted, and while there are very small amounts of correspondence for the years 1995, 1996, 1998 and 1999 the majority of the material covers the time period of January 2000 to October 2004 and January 2007 to November 2008. As the correspondence deals with events Paul Martin did not attend, there does not tend to be any material created by Paul Martin's staff. The correspondence will occasionally include some background material that was sent with the original invitation, and often nothing else. As a large percentage of regrets were made by telephone, there will be more annotations and/or photocopies of notes indicating the reason for the regret, with fewer formal written replies from Paul Martin or his staff.
