Sub-series consists of aircraft accident investigation files created by the Canadian Forces Directorate of Flight Safety. The files are all arranged under the file number 1010 of the National Defence file classification system, followed by the aircraft registration number, e.g. 1010-104874 for the CF104 with the registration number 104874. The files relate only to serious accidents in which the aircraft was destroyed, often with fatalities to the aircrew.

Researchers should note that the Canadian Forces changed their aircraft registration numbering system after the unification of the Canadian Armed Forces in 1966. Therefore, depending on when the crash occurred, some aircraft may be listed with both their former number and the number under the CF system. For example, CF104635 was formerly registered as a/c 12635.

The files typically contain information on the notification of the accident; search and location of the aircraft; recovery operation; investigation; and the report of the Board of Inquiry into the cause of the accident.
