General note:

After the fall of Canal du Nord the stalemate along the Western Front broke and the German Army began to withdraw to the Hermann Line. The Allies were now back to fighting a war of movement, and since they could move faster than detailed, large-scale maps could be produced, the cartographic coverage of this stage of the war is minimal. The Canadian corps reached the Hermann Line at Valenciennes during the last week of October. On November 1st, Canadian artillery threw one of the heaviest barrages in the war at the German army on Mount Houy. Within hours the German defence crumbled, enabling Canadian infantry to capture Valenciennes with few casualties.

The original World War I map collection was constituted from various sources at a time when adequate records on provenance were not preserved by the then Public Archives. The present organization in sub-series was devised to accommodate maps found in other fonds and collections, therefore, the list below will include maps that may not be ordered from the present record. Researchers should consult any alternate MIKAN record number that appears below. Maps marked by the letters WWI do belong to the original collection and may be ordered here. Please note though that almost all the maps are available on microfiche and may be consulted on the premises directly from self-serve cabinets.
