Collection search - Sub-series 3.9: Amiens May 1918 - September 1918 [cartographic material]

The Battle for Amiens was spearheaded by the Australian and Canadian Corps, assisted by the British III Corps along the northern flank and by the French First Army along the southern flank. The main assault was a coordinated effort involving tanks, aircraft, artillery, and of course infantry. It was launched on August 8th, 1918 and continued for about 10 days, during which time four Canadian divisions routed some 15 German divisions. Although Canadian casualties were high, some 9,000 troops were killed or wounded, the attack proved significant for its demoralizing effect on the German Army. German General Erich Ludendorff's memoirs referred to the opening battle as "the Black Day of the German Army", since it precipitated the decline of the German army and opened the "last hundred" days of the war.
