Canadian Human Rights Commission : The Canadian Human Rights Commission was established in 1977 following the passage of the Canadian Human Rights Act (1976-1977, c. 33, s.1), and began its operations in 1978. The Commission is responsible for discouraging and reducing discriminatory practices in areas of federal jurisdiction, for promoting a better understanding of the Canadian Human Rights Act, and for providing an effective and timely means for resolving individual complaints. In addition, the Commission undertakes research and special studies on human rights issues, and acts in concert with similar provincial bodies to foster common policies and practices. Although independent of the federal government, the Commission reports to Parliament through the Minister of Justice.

Up to 1983, as per Part IV of the Canadian Human Rights Act, the Privacy Commissioner was part of the Canadian Human Rights Commission. With the passing of the Privacy Act in 1983, the Canadian Human Rights Commission underwent changes. Part IV of the Canadian Human Rights Act was repealed and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, independent of the Canadian Human Rights Commission, was created.

The Commission currently consists of six branches (Legal Services, Anti-Discrimination Programs, Employment Equity, Policy and Liaison, Human Rights Promotion, and Corporate and Personnel Services) as well as the Office of the Secretary General and the Executive Secretariat. In addition to its Ottawa headquarters, the Commission maintains regional offices at Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Vancouver.
