Douglas (Doug) Sneyd (b. 1933 Guelph, Ontario) is a Canadian artist, illustrator and commercial Canadian artist. After working as a successgul free-lance artist in the early 1960's he was the illustrator for children's textbooks and other books and magazines. His later work as a cartoonist for Playboy Magazine brought him an international reputation and renown as one of Canada's premier 20th century cartoonists.

The accession consists of 30 original artworks by Doug Sneyd, including 6 finished final presentation cartoons in watercolour (coloured inks) on commercial watercolour board. The accession also consists of 24 associated and / or preliminary watercolours or drawings (known as cartoon roughs). The finished works were presented to Playboy Enterprises International Inc. and subsequently approved and published in Playboy Magazine between the years 1993 - 2000. The artworks are more recent than those of previous accessions. In addition the accession consists of some supporting material in the form of business letters and memos between Mr. Sneyd and Playboy Enterprises International documenting business transactions and the submission of these proposed designs and finished cartoons. Some of the small notes document approvals, being initialed by Hugh M. Hefner founder of Playboy Enterprises, illustrating the business process of selection and final approval by Mr. Hefner. Cartoon production process is described in a publication donated, written by the artist: Doug Sneyd, titled: Unpublished, Vol. 1, c. Sneyd Syndicate Inc., 2007.

In Septermber 2009, the artist sent LAC added support documentation to be added to his fonds; the addition was not for monetary compensation. This material includes a reproduction: "2009 FAN EXPO CANADA"; a Christmas card:( with illustration from following booklet); a booklet : "THE ART OF DOUG SNEYD, CHRISTMAS IN TORONTO"; "THE ART OF DOUG SNEYD, PLAYBOY Preliminaries." All material under copyright.

The cartoons are an accrual to former material acquired from the artist, Douglas Sneyd: 242 works [art accession 1997-224]; 12 watercolours [art accession R3254-1 to -12] acquired in 2000.

Custodial history:

Artworks were submitted and approved for publication to Playboy Enterprises International Inc. and afterwards returned to the artist.
