Torossian, Gariné, 1970- : Gariné Torossian is a self-taught filmmaker and photographer. She was born in Beirut, Lebanon of Armenian origin and moved to Canada in 1979. She attended film, photography and English language courses at York University in Toronto, Canada. Fourteen of her films have shown internationally at festivals. Retrospectives of her work have taken place at New York's Museum of Modern Art, Ottawa, Winnipeg, and Armenia's Cinematheque, Berlin Arsenal and Telluride Film Festival. Torossian's film Girl from Moush (1994) received a Kino award at the Melbourne International Film Festival. Sparklehorse (1999) received honorable mention at the 2000 Berlin International Film Festival, Hokees (2000) won best experimental drama at the Houston Film Festival, and Babies on the Sun (2001) received the Panorama Short Film prize at the 2002 Berlin International Film Festival. Shadowy Encounters (2002) screened at the Venice and Toronto International Film Festivals.
