The first part of this series consists of a set of diary files put together by Ross Campbell between 1967 and 1972 when he was the Canadian Ambassador at NATO, and between 1973 and 1975 when he was the Canadian Ambassador in Japan. Those files contains drafts of diplomatic cables sent to External Affairs and copies of letters sent by Campbell to important Canadian or foreign individuals (ambassadors, politicians, high-ranking officers, etc). Some subjects addressed are: questions of Cyprus and Malta, USA initiative about Vietnam, sale of military equipment to Portugal, SALT consultations, President Nixon visit to NATO, Canada/Japan relations, visits of Canadian politicians in Japan, or Year of Europe in Japan. It shows with a lot of details the day-to-day life of an Ambassador and the relations he has with the Department of External Affairs.

The second part of the series contains subject files regarding an range of subjects including personnel matters (related to both Mr. Campbell and colleagues), postings, oral history projects, the Canadian military, UN peacekeeping, nuclear weapons amongst others.

Series also contains photographs related to Ross Campbell's work as Ambassador to Yugoslavia, NATO, Japan and Korea.
