Steinhart, Allan, 1940-1996 : Allan Steinhart who died in 1996 was one the the most prominent figures in postal history in Canada. Born in 1940, He attended the University of Toronto. After spending 15 years as a furniture dealer, he became a stamp dealer in mid 1970's. Unemployed, he decided to start business with his hobby.

Steinhart was very active in postal history and his knowledge made him one of the leader in the field of philately in Canada. He wrote many books and articles in major philatelic journals (American Philatelist, BNA Topics, PHSC Journal) and bulletins. He is the author of The Admiral Era, A Rate Study: 1912-1928 and The Postal History of the Post Cards in Canada: 1871-1911.
He was a member of many philatelic societies: the British North American Philatelic Society since 1963 (member of the Order of the Beaver), the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada (fellow in 1988), the United Kingdom Postal History Society (by invitation), The American Philatelic Society and the Canadian Stamp Dealers' Association.
Steinhart was also a collector and he participated to various philatelic exhibitions at national and international levels. Four of his five collections were awarded the vermeil medal. Steinhart won also many other medals (most of them gold) from 1974 to 1996 for his collections through his philatelic career.
Allan Steinhart played a major role in the development of the postal history in Canada and in the world. He was so important and renown that a tribute was published one year after his death; Allan Steinhart, Postal Historian, edited by David Handelman and Gray Scrimgeour, 1997.
