Canada is one of the very few countries in the world offering limitless opportunities to refugees who arrive penniless within its borders. In 1956 it welcomed me with open arms when I arrived as a Hungarian refugee. Within a month the Dominion Bureau of Statistics had hired me as a clerk. The Bureau supported me during my studies for my Ph.D. Within 15 years I was offered a position as assistant deputy minister and, in 1985, as a deputy minister for Statistics Canada. Never have I experienced discrimination for not being a native born Canadian.

May Canada always continue to be known for its fairness, lack of bigotry, humane values and social solidarity. May it always give joy to its citizens returning from abroad; for whatever other countries have to offer, this is the one to which I am always happy to come home.
