Inside cover, left: The subject of Mrs. Cryderman's sketch is London's first school, first Public / Building and one of the first buildings of the early settlement. Erected in 1826 at / the southwest corner of Dundas and Ridout Streets, it was a temporary Court House / and Gaol and there Peter Van Every, the gaoler, taught school. / Moved by oxen to King Street two years later, it became, in 1837, the Grammar / School for the District of London. The first regularly appointed teacher for the new / Grammar School was Francis Henry Wright, B.A., described as "a gentleman of / unimpeachable character and high literary attainments."
