This fonds contains three different parts:
-Voyage round the world on board the ship Columbia-Rediviva and sloop Washington, 1787-1789, written by Robert Haswell. Log and narrative of the voyage of the ship Columbia Rediviva and sloop Lady Washington, commanded by John Kendrick and Robert Gray respectively, from Boston (Mass.) to the northwest coast to trade with native Americans for sea otter furs, thence to Canton to trade the furs for tea and other wares, and then homeward to Boston. The narrative covers the period 28 Sep. 1787 to 17 June 1789, when the ships were still plying the northwest coast for furs. Includes a "vocabulary of Nootka Sound," a glossary of words in the Nootka language (reel M-xxxx).
-Voyage on discoveries in the ship Columbia Rediviva, 1791-1793. Log and narrative of the 2nd voyage of the ship Columbia Rediviva from Boston to the northwest coast of America, to Canton, China, and home to Boston, recorded by Robert Haswell, 1st mate. The narrative covers the period 14 Aug. 1791 (on Hancock's River) to 26 May 1793 (on St. Helena). The Columbia, commanded by Captain Robert Gray, sailed up and down the northwest coast trading with the native Americans for sea otter furs, sailed to the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii), and then traded the furs in Canton for tea and other Chinese wares (reel M-xxxx).
-Columbia papers II, 1790. Papers of the ship Columbia, related to her second voyage (1790-1793) to the Northwest Coast of America, the Pacific islands, and China to trade sea-otter furs. Papers include bills and accounts for provisions, cargo, out-fitting the ship, tools, work, a list of officers and crew, and orders to Captain Robert Gray. Many items are addressed to Joseph Barrell, one of the ship's owners (reel M-xxxx).

Haswell, Robert, 1768-1801 : Robert Haswell, a Massachusetts fur trader, took part in the expeditions of the ship Columbia Rediviva on the northwest coast and around the globe between 1787 and 1793. He died at sea in 1801.

The two logs written by Robert Haswell have been printed as "Voyages of the "Columbia" to the Northwest coast, 1787-1790 and 1790-1793", edited by Frederic W. Howay (Boston, MHS, 1941) and reprinted in 1969 and 1990.
