The majority of the photographs were taken on Grosse Isle, Quebec and concern activities of the Department of National Defense on the island in the period from the early 1940s to the late 1950s; views of buildings on the island, including some interior views of facilties; armed forces personnel on the island and in Quebec City (including U.S. armed forces personnel); equipment used in some of the buildings.

Attributions and conjectures:

The photographs in this collection were taken by a number of different persons using a number of different cameras over a period of about twenty years. Probably a number of them were taken by Vernon Walker, but these cannot be identified.

Custodial history:

Created by army veterinarian Vernon Walker, while he worked at the Grosse Isle experimental facility; subsequently given to his colleague Dr. Julius Frank, who may have added photographs.
