He / was one of the seven sons of Nicolas Antoine Coulon de Villiers of / whom six died on the field of battle. / Among them was Joseph Louis Coulon de Villiers, Sieur de / Jumonville, who was killed in 1754 while carrying a message to the / English Commander-in-Chief. François Coulon, known as "The / Great Villiers," was sent to avenge his brother's death and received / the surrender of Washington at Fort Necessity. In 1757 he captured / Fort Granville. In 1759 he was taken prisoner at Fort Niagara, / and in 1761 was sent to Europe where he received the cross of St. / Louis for his distinguished services. He returned to Louisiana and / after marrying three times, died at the age of 91 leaving six children.
