The photographs were taken by musician / photographer Barbara McDougall at a number of venues across Canada, but primarily in Victoria, B.C., and over a period of years from the early 1980s to the late 1990s. A number of the photographs were taken as illustrations for articles she wrote which were published in specialist musical journals such as The Strad.

The photographs are of a number of individual musicians, including her husband Ian McDougall; Gwen and Desmond Hoebig; violinist Lorand Fenyves (under whom Barbara McDougall studied at the University of Toronto); jazz saxophone player Fraser Macpherson; violinist Jonathan Crow, at the age of 17 or 18; concertmaster of the Vancouver Symphony, Robert Davidovici; double bassist Gary Karr;jazz guitarist Oliver Gannon; violinist Stephen Staryk; jazz saxophonist and arranger Jerry Toth; the Lafayette Quartet, resident at the University of Victoria; and luthier Jim Ham. A number of photographs also show the bass fiddles created by Mr. Ham, and some of his innovations. A series of photographs of the Amici quartet of string instruments (owned by the University of Saskatchewan but loaned for some period of time to the Lafayette Quartet) is included.
