File consists of two letters sent to Lord Minto and one petition sent to Viscount Palmerston, Principal Secretary of State for the Foreign Department (England). They are related to fisheries negotiations between Newfoundland, Canada and European countries. At that time Newfoundland territory was governed by England. This province entered into Canadian Confederation in 1949. By these letters, the people of Newfoundland asked to obtain "for their produce (codfish) more favourable terms of admission into Foreign States because of the principal if not sole dependence of its population now consisting of eighty thousand". At that time, this resource was very important to the Canadian and English economies.
