The art of heraldry has long been practised in continental Europe, and when European powers began to claim possessions in North America, the use of heraldic devices, such as coats-of-arms, flags, and other emblems, began to occur (such as Jacques Cartier's raising of a cross with the French Royal Coat of Arms in the Gaspé in July 1534). Over the centuries Canadians have become less attached to the concept of owning armorial bearings in either a corporate or family environment, but many individuals and families still express their genealogy or their familial importance through the use of such devices. Many Canadian companies, as well as organizations such as the Armed Forces, continue to use emblems or heraldic devices as unique identifiers.

Flags continue to be widely used in a variety of circumstances and for a variety of purposes as well.

Heraldic devices and related material acquired by the Public Archives of Canada in the period from ca. 1880 to ca. 1970 from a variety of sources, including dealers, other vendors, private donors, other government departments, or from unknown sources, which depict the armorial bearings, emblems, flags, or heraldic appurtenances of families, corporations, military organizations and units, or other individuals and organizations active in, or relating to Canada, in the period from ca. 1600 to ca. 1970.

Almost all of these items have never been accessioned, as they were likely acquired prior to 1931, when a systematic accessioning system was put into place. Also included are hearldic items which may have a source, but which are not linked to a current descriptive record as a single item, or as a discrete item.
