The Migration of Skivens, authored and illustrated by John Francis Wilson, recounts the adventures of an English immigrant to Canada (such as was Wilson) who, leaving the life of a clerk in England takes up that of a farmer in western Canada (as did Wilson). The manuscript was ultimately published in 1962 by the MacMillan Company of Canada as The Story of the Migration of Skivins and His First Year in Western Canada. The photographs in the accession are a copy of the manuscript, and with the accompanying slight number of memoranda illustrate some of the steps taken by the NFB animation unit in preparing filmstrips.
The accession also includes a number of copy negatives relating to Banting, Best, and insulin taken from a number of unidentified published and unpublished sources.

Custodial history:

The original manuscript of The Migration of Skivens was loaned to the National Film Board in the early-mid 1950s when it was considered it might be possible to make a film strip from it. At this time the manuscript was copied photographically and prints were made from the negatives. However the decision was made to not proceed with a filmstrip project and the manuscript was returned to the lender in 1957.
