Address by President Harry S. Truman from the National Guard Armory in Washington, D.C., Truman delivers a speech at the annual Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner.~After an anecdote relating the defensive action taken by President Jefferson during Barbary pirate attacks, President Truman urges Democrats to put patriotism before politics at this time when the welfare of the United States is being threatened by Kremlin plans to conquer the civilized world. Truman defends the current U.S. military support for Korea as a measure impeding Communist imperialism and placing a strain on the whole system of dictatorship. Truman indicates his desire for a peaceful settlement but only on conditions which will protect the objectives of the United Nations. He criticizes the platforms of the Republican Party and that party's criticism of him. Truman prefers to concern himself only with getting a defense program carried out as quickly as possible saying, "We are building an industrial system which can turn out more military supplies than ever before in history, and that is the greatest turn out in the history of the world". Truman closes the speech by declaring that "we can enjoy the benefits of freedom only if we assume the responsibilities that go with it". <25mn>
