The International Career and Post-retirement Series consists of documents related to Johnson's activities as Head of Mission to Indonesia on Administrative Modernization, Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and mainly as Head of Mission to South Africa on Public Administration (1992-1994) and Special Advisor, CIDA/IDRC Program on Governance in South Africa (1993-1999). During these years, he was advisor to civil servants in South Africa on Constitutional Problems and on the organization of the public service. He participated in many committees and projects: the Technical Committee on Constitution, the Public Service Policy Project, the Financial and Fiscal Commission, etc.

Back to Canada in 1999, he was asked to give advice on many subjects. In 2000, he was involved in the Health Care Coalition. In 2001, he participated in the Commission on Medicare-Saskatchewan, headed by Ken Fyke and in the Royal Commission on the Future of Health Care in Canada, headed by Roy Romanov. The Romanov report, released in 2002, outlined suggestions to improve the health care system in Canada.

This series contains Johnson's research files related to his activities in South Africa, especially the creation and support to the Program on Governance and the Public Service Policy Project. It also contains files concerning his research and reports to the Commission on Medicare-Saskatchewan and the Royal Commission on the Future Heatlth Care in Canada. Among them, there are some files concerning the creation of Medicare in Saskatchewan between 1959 and 1963.

This series contains some photographs of Mandela's home and Mandela himself with Al Johnson and colleagues in Pretoria, South Africa. It contains two first day postal covers created for the election of the President Nelson Mandela in 1994 by the Postal Service of South Africa. 1) A Special Stamp Serie Commerorating the inauguration of the President of South Africa, Pretoria, May 10, 1984 (4 stamps: Nelson Mandela, 40c; Die Stem van Suid Afrika 70c; Flag 95c and Presidential building, R1, 15) and 2) Peace Vrede, Vrede 8 April 1994 (four stamps representing young children of different nationalities, 40c, 70c, 95c and R1, 15).
