Paintings by the Ottawa artist Franklin Brownell (1857-1946), primarily landscape of the Gatineau, but also including views of the Byward Market, Ottawa; of Lake Louisa in Algonquin Park; of Kazabazua, Ile aux Coudres, and Percé, Québec, and of other locations; portraits of members of the Edwards family, including one of John Edwards by Franklin Brownell; one of Mr. W. Edwards and one of his wife by British artist W.J. Parker; and portraits of other family members, as well as one of Mrs. Brownell.

Edwards, Elizabeth (1914- ) : Elizabeth Edwards was born in 1914, the daughter of Gordon Cameron Edwards, who was in turn the nephew of W. C. Edwards, lumber merchant, Member of Parliament, and Canadian senator. Gordon Edwards, also a lumber merchant, was born in November 1866 in Thurso. He became a member of First Baptist Church of Ottawa in June 1883, and was a generous benefactor to the church throughout his life. Among his many accomplishments: he helped to found the Laurentian Club in 1904; he was Liberal Member of Parliament for the City of Ottawa, 1926-1930; he was part of a group of Baptist businessmen who, in 1928, pledged financial support of Brandon College. He was also a director of many companies, including the Canadian Bank of Commerce, Canada Cement Company, Canadian International Paper Company, and the Ottawa Valley Trust Company. Throughout his life, Mr. Edwards acquired a fine art collection, the best of which was purchased after his death by the Director of the National Gallery, who, according to Mr. Edwards' cousin, Florence, went to Prime Minister Mackenzie King personally for authorization. Miss Edwards inherited many works of art from her father, and they have remained in her hands until their donation to LAC.

The Edwards family was well-known in the Ottawa valley in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Gordon Cameron Edwards, the father of the donor, was the nephew of W. C. Edwards, lumber merchant, Member of Parliament, and Canadian senator. W.C. Edwards had owned lumber mills in Hawkesbury, Gatineau, and elsewhere in the Ottawa valley. Gordon Edwards, also a lumber merchant, was born in November 1866 in Thurso. The National Gallery owns three works by Franklin Brownell, including Old Fishing Station, Percé (1913), Springtime ( 1922), The Beach, St. Kitts (1913), and three works by Cornelius Kreighoff, The Chaudière (1858), The Habitant Farm (1856), and Winter Landscape (1849), donated in memory of Senator W. C. Edwards and his wife. Three of the paintings were donated by Gordon Edwards, and three by Edith Wilson (née Edwards).
