Sub-series consists of surveys of various fisheries and fishing communities in Newfoundland. The surveys were part of a project developed by the Governments of Canada and Newfoundland on the recommendation by the Newfoundland Fisheries Development Committee. The bulk of the surveys were carried out in July and August of 1952. The aim of the project was to collect data to be later used as guidance in planning and carrying out a programme of fisheries development.

Each survey contains information on the commercial fisheries of the particular area as well as information on the harbour facilities, forestry, agriculture and the social aspects of community life. Most of the surveys include hand-drawn maps of the locale as well as copies of photos of the area. Notably, there is a report on the ports of the South and West coasts of Newfoundland that is entirely made up of copied photographs. This sub-series also contains an index of the 1952 surveys as well as a large map of Newfoundland.
