Interview of Senator Frederick Addison McGrand by author Peter Stursberg, about: Frederick Addison McGrand; his family background; his education in rural New Brunswick; studying medicine at McGill University; his internship at Fall River, Massachusetts; his practices at Wellesford and Fredericton Junction, New Brunswick; difficulties of early medical practice in rural New Brunswick circa 1925; life in rural New Brunswick circa the 1990s; Dr. W.M. Jenkins; McGrand's interest in politics; his election to the Queen's County Council representing the parish of Petersville in 1927; travelling to the Queen's County Council meetings in Gagetown; paupers; Lilberal Party support by the majority of Roman Catholics in New Brunswick in reaction to the New Brunswick School Act of 1869, which made school support compulstory, making schools free but non-sectarian, a blow to Roman Catholic separate schools; and the influence of Roman Catholic Liberal Member of Parliament Timothy Anglin through his newspaper The Freeman; McGrand's appointment and experiences as Speaker of the New Brunswick Legislature from 1940 to 1944; the provincial Liberal government of New Brunswick circa 1939-1952; John B McNair; J. Kidd FLemming; the use of the French language in the New Brunswick Legislature; English-French relations in New Brunswick; McGrand's experiences and achievements as Minister of Health and Social Services for New Brunswick 1944-1952; Dr. Fletcher Peacock; his development of an educational system suitable for rural New Brunswick; regional high schools; the growth of government, its costs and unionization of the New Brunswick civil service. <2h 1mn>
