Set in the Vancouver neighbourhood of Mount Pleasant, a district that is a residential metaphor for the collision between the lives of the working poor and the forces of urban gentrification, MOUNT PLEASANT is a feature drama about love, obsession and real estate, dealing with three disparate couples whose lives intersect in meaningful ways. Young couples with children are moving back to Mount Pleasant, but junkies and prostitutes still cut through the alleyways behind the rows of family houses. The story opens as a little girl, Courtney, finds a discarded hypodermic needle while playing in the backyard of the home her parents, Doug and Sarah, bought not too long ago. Events are put in motion when the girl surreptitiously picks up the syringe and pricks herself. Rushing to the hospital, her parents are told that it will take weeks before they know for sure if their daughter has been infected with hepatitis, HIV, or some other virus/disease. The event prompts Doug to join a neighbourhood watch group, an organization hoping the citizen patrols will help clear the playgrounds of needles and the streets of drug users and prostitutes. Stephen, a real estate agent, has a beautiful social-climbing wife, Ann, a teenage daughter, Megan, and a picture-perfect house on the affluent West Side. Stephen also has a darker side - he regularly visits Mount Pleasant looking for underage prostitutes. His main "client" is Nadia, a seventeen-year old heroin addict, with whom Stephen has regular "nooner sex" in his brand new SUV, usually parked in one of the Mount Pleasant laneways. Nadia is controlled by her boyfriend-turned-pimp, Nick, who has promised her a fantasy trip to Thailand and who, in his spare time, prowls the alleyway of Mount Pleasant, looking for things he can steal and pawn for dope money. Sarah, the little girl's mother works with Stephen's wife, Ann, who is oblivious to Stephen's sexual transgressions. When Sarah's husband, Doug, catches Stephen with Nadia in Stephen's SUV parked near the area where his daughter found the needle, realizing that some of the undesirables in the Mount Pleasant community come from a better part of town, the three couples become irrevocably connected and the course of their lives is changed forever. <1h 26mn 53s>
