CP is digging a train tunnel through Mount Macdonald, using a tunnel boring machine called a mole to dig from the east side (the tunnel entrance) and the conventional method of drilling, blasting and mucking to dig from the west side. The west portal is the tunnel exit. This video describes the digging process in detail, including close-up ups the mole in operation and tunnel muck on conveyors for removal from the tunnel. There are also visuals of the use of laser beams and electronic surveys to ensure accuracy. After the tunnel is dug, the next step is the finishing operation, which consists of two tasks, benching and lining. The benching process will cut the lower walls and floor of the tunnel to achieve its final shape. Lining consists of constructing the concrete lining and the roadbed. CP expects the tunnel to be completed in 1987. <4mn>Language:EnglishNotes:Detailed holdings information: -
