I, CLAUDIA is a television adaptation of Kristen Thomson's hit one-woman show by the same name. A pre-teen at twelve and three quarters, Claudia is still struggling with the idea of her parents' divorce. Her dad is getting re-married, she has a science fair project with a tight deadline and she is in the physical and emotional rollercoaster known as puberty. Intelligent and charismatic, Claudia is astoundingly sincere, but also tightly wound. Angry with and incredulous at the grown-up world that surrounds her, Claudia addresses the audience from inside the boiler room of her school where she goes and stores all the things that are secret and special to her. It is here, in the basement, that Claudia transforms herself into other characters in her life and lands in other worlds. So, we are intermittently greeted by her loving grandfather Douglas, her delicate, soon-to-be stepmother Leslie, and Drachman, the school's Bulgonian custodian. Having developed the play over the course of two years of improvisations at the National Theatre School, Thomson portrays all four characters with the aid of specially made latex masks reminiscent of classical Greek theatre and made by theatre designer Abdel Kader Farrah. This adaptation of the Toronto stage actress' Dora Mavor Moore Award-winning play is filmed on minimalist sets in a quasi-documentary style. <1h 15mn>
