News media briefing held in Ottawa and given by senior government officials including Peter Donolo, the Director of Communications for the Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, the Secretary to the Cabinet on foreign policy and defence policy James Bartleman, the assistant deputy minister in Foreign Affairs for Asia Pacific Len Edwards, and the general director responsible for Asia Pacific at Foreign Affairs [Gordon Smith], concerning Prime Minister Jean Chrétien’s upcoming trip to Asia, between November 4 and November 18, 1994. Included subjects are a detailed itinerary of this trip, including China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Indonesia to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting, the main goals of this trip for the Canadian government, such as opening new markets with Asia for Canadian businesses, an update on the relations with China, the case of Hong Kong, which return to China’s control in 1999, the role of the APEC Summit, the Canadian objectives during this Summit, concerns over human rights in Indonesia and in Vietnam, some concerns over labour rights, and a scheduled speech by Chrétien to be given to Chinese students, a sign of a more open attitude on China’s part. <70mn>
