This is the second segment of the SOUNDS LIKE CANADA program. Kevin Sylvester interviews D.R. Fraser Taylor, Distinguished Research Professor with the Geomatics and Cartographic Research Centre (GCRC) at Carleton University in Ottawa, and Steven Fick, Chief Cartographer for Canadian Geographic magazine. They discuss how technology such as computer-assisted design and Google have changed how maps are made and people's attitudes to maps. New technologies are putting the ability to make maps in the hands of communities, and map-making is no longer the exclusive domain of professional cartographers. The concept of authoritative maps created by official organizations such as governments has been altered by technology. The role of such official maps, in providing locations, remains important, but they also serve as base maps over which communities overlay their own themes, such as climate change. Map-making has become democratized. Examples include comparisons between the mental maps handed down over the years to Inuit hunters and how pictorial representations of these mental maps compare to more standard maps. Map-making software helps people who think spatially. Technology is capable of making maps that may or may not be attractively designed. Map-makers used to hand-drawn techniques can scan their artwork and then use software to complete the map. Cartographers work with artists who see maps as works of art. For both interviewees, developments in technology have had a positive impact on cartography. <17mn 43s>
