MARS RISING is a six-part documentary mini-series about the first manned mission to the Red Planet awaiting us in this century's not-so-distant future. The documentary explores the important challenges facing this mission and examines the efforts being made by scientists, engineers and planners to contend with the crucial problems that must be resolved before any expedition can go ahead. The series was shot in HD in over ninety locations, and features numerous interviews, training sessions and experiments in the United States, Russia, Chile, China, Europe and Canada. Over three hundred scientists from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds were consulted for the series and more than sixty space experts, including former and current astronauts, provide their insights on camera. They include, among others, James Garvin, lead scientist for Mars and Lunar Exploration at NASA; Paul Delaney, professor of Physics and Astronomy at Toronto's York University; Oscar winning film director James Cameron, a member of NASA's special advisory committee; Chris Hadfield, the first Canadian mission specialist and the first Canadian to operate the Canadarm in orbit; Dave Williams, Canadian currently on board the Atlantis who is also expected to make three space walks on the Shuttle Endeavour in August 2007; Jerry Linenger, retired NASA astronaut who spent 132 days aboard the ISS MIR in 1997; and Jeffrey Hoffman, member of the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame. The subjects explored through the series include spaceship design, possible trajectories, rocket fuel, finding new life forms, new thoughts on astronaut selection and training, space suit engineering, medical training for deep space, blasting through the Mars atmosphere, life support systems, and robotics. In this episode, Dr. James Garvin, lead scientist for Mars and Lunar Exploration at NASA; and Dr. Paul Delaney, professor of Physics and Astronomy at Toronto's York University, describe the remarkable challenges and numerous difficulties encountered by the international space community in sending a human mission to Mars - and bringing it back. <45mn 50s>
