Frank Williams interviews James P. Gilmore, former Interim President of the CBC. Gilmore comments on: his birth in Saskatchewan in 1917; his childhood and early involvement in the Amateur Radio Relay League; interests in sports and his broadcasts of athletic events; his first work for the private station CKMO and later CJOR; his first job with the CBC in 1941 when he was hired to replace Jack Peach as a member of Andrew Allan's drama production team in Vancouver; sound effects work on THE CARSONS; transfer to the Prince Rupert station in 1942; growth in his technical expertise; attendance at the United Nations Conference in San Francisco in 1945; Operations Department of Engineering Headquarters in Montreal in 1948; his efforts to secure uniform standards of studio operations across the CBC network; his studies of new broadcast technology; his assessment of the cost of introducing television on the basis of "total cost" accounting which had been seldom used before; Assistant Director of Engineering, Products and Services; duties as coordinator of Royal Tour of 1951; promotion to Ernest Bushnell's assistant; attendance at the Second Commonwealth Conference in London in 1952; his role in the broadcast of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1953; his move from Montreal to Ottawa in 1961 to replace Bushnell as Co-ordinator of Television; Vice-President in charge of Engineering and Operations and later, Vice-President, Administration; his and Alphonse Ouimet's creation of position of Vice-President Planning which Gilmore later took on; work as Assistant General Manager for Television from 1964 to 1967; and planning of coverage of Expo '67 in Montreal. <2h 55mn>
