The scrapbook was put together by the family of George Tate, an English builder who seems to have been in Canada from ca. 1858-1863, when he was in charge of the construction of a parish church in Yorkville, north of Toronto, and worked on the Grand Trunk Railway. Tate was also the builder of the Don Jail. The scrapbook contains a lithographic presentation plate to George Tate, 11 drawings and watercolours with Spanish themes, 30 watercolours and drawings related to English life, and most interestingly, 8 watercolours and 16 drawings, mostly of Toronto street scenes, including Yorkville House, St. Paul's Church, Yorkville, some domestic interiors, views of various Toronto houses on Davenport Avenue and elsewhere, views in the Don River valley, men cutting wood, and other scenes. Some of the watercolours are signed by Edward Radford (1831-1920), an architect practicing in Toronto during this period who became more famous as a watercolourist later in life. Some of the architectural views are quite beautiful. The English scenes include views of outings to the seashore and some interior views of a residence on Guernsey, Channel Islands.

Custodial history:

This scrapbook was amassed by a member of the George Tate family. Tate was an engineer and builder, apparently employed on the Grand Trunk Railway in Canada from at least 1858 to 1863, although he is known to have been active since the 1840s. The album seems to have passed through family descent and then been sold through an auction house or dealer to Mr. Winkworth. The scrapbook remained in Mr. Winkworth's personal library until sold at auction as part of lot 7 in a Bloomsbury Boos Auction in London, England on October 2, 2008.
