News media briefing held in the National Press Theatre in Ottawa and given by senior government officials including Peter Donolo, the Director of Communications for Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, the Secretary to the Cabinet on foreign defence policies James Bartleman, the assistant Deputy Minister responsible for International Trade at the Department of Finance [Jim Judge], the assistant Deputy Minister responsible for Trade and Economy policies at Foreign Affairs and Canadian Sherpa for this Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Economic (APEC) Leaders’ Meeting in Vancouver Len Edwards, the assistant Deputy Minister responsible for Asia Pacific and Africa at Foreign Affairs [Marc Brault], and the Director General for APEC John Classen, concerning the APEC Summit to be hosted in Vancouver, British Columbia, on November 24 and 25. Included subjects are the schedule for this APEC Summit, the Canadian objectives during this summit such as finding new signing countries for the Global Ban on Anti-Personnel Landmines Treaty, expected discussions on trade facilitation and sustainable development, an official visit to Canada by the Chinese President Jiang Zemin prior to the APEC, an official visit to Canada by the Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir bin Mohamad prior to the APEC, and an official visit to Canada by the President of the Philippines Fidel Ramos after the APEC. <60mn>
