File consists of lithographs based on sketches that were originally made in 1845-6.The sketches were meant to document a recognizance expedition ordered by the British government to contend with the American threat to take over the Oregon territory despite a treaty of joint occupation. The images documented areas with new American settlements, natural resources and ideal fort locations, such as Cape Disappointment, in order to prepare for any eventual conflict. This file is part of a set and is associated to file number 3840685.

Warre, Henry James, Sir, 1819-1898 : Sir Henry James Warre (1819-1898), army officer, artist, pursued a distinguished career in the British Army, chiefly with the 14th and 57th Regiments, in North America, the Crimean War, the Maori Wars in New Zealand, and in India. Following his studies at Sandhurst, 1832-1837, he was appointed aide-de-camp to his uncle, Lieutenant General Sir Richard Downes Jackson, then Commander-in-Chief of the Forces in North America.

While in North America, 1839-1846, Warre travelled on inspection tours of garrisons, carried despatches to Washington, and in company with his fellow Lieutenant, Mervin Vavasour, made a secret military reconnaissance mission to the Oregon Territory, 1845-1846.
