Speeches given by Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, a member of the Canadian Institute for Environmental Law and Policy (CIELAP) Board [Marjorie Lamm], CIELAP Executive Director [Ann Mitchell], the Canadian Ambassador for the Environment and former Speaker of the House Commons Gilbert Parent, and CIELAP President of the Board [David Powell] on the occasion of a networking and cocktail party for the 33rd anniversary of CIELAP. Included subjects are the history of the Canadian Environmental Law and Research Foundation (CELRF) which became the CIELAP, the environmental protection of the Great Lakes, the importance of implementing the Kyoto Protocol, the importance of sustainable development for prosperity, tributes to the work done by Gilbert Parent and Jean Chrétien for the environment, the possibilities through the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol to develop new exportable greener technologies and thereby give Canada an economic edge, a tribute to the role of the CIELAP and the inspiration it gives to Canadians, the federal government’s role to advance the environmental agenda, the possibility for Canada to take a leadership role in sustainable development and even influence the U.S. policies, and Chrétien’s memories of the creation of national parks. Also includes the giving to Chrétien of an award for his personal role in advancing the environmental agenda in Canada. Followed by the reception itself with unidentified chatter. <30mn>
