The file comprises sound recordings of the proceedings of the Founding Conference of the History of the Book in Canada project (Histoire du livre et d'imprimé) held at the National Library of Canada, May 23 - 25, 1997. The recordings include two keynote speakers, the presentation of scholarly papers on the history of books, publishing and print culture, questions posed to the speakers, and an open discussion of a proposal for a multi-volume history of the book in Canada. The keynote speakers were Bill Bell and Robert A. Gross. Other speakers and session chairs included Tom Vincent, Carole Gerson, Patricia Fleming, Lesley Howsam, Gilles Gallichan, Bruce Whiteman, Heather Murray, Michel Brisebois, Yvan Lamonde, Ann Yandle, François Melançon (français), Germaine Warkentin, Fiona Black, Gwynneth Evans, Bertrum MacDonald, David McKnight, Francess Halpenny, Margaret Williams, Jennifer Connor, Christina Burr, George Parker, Grant Campbell, George Elliott Clarke, Carl Spadoni, Claude Martin (français), Jacques Lemieux (français), Pierre Hébert (français), MaryLu MacDonald, and Mary Jane Edwards.
