Watercolours depicting scenes around Quebec City and vicinity, including the St. Roch Suburb, Rue St Louis, Indian Lorette, Montmorenci, Lake St. Charles, Beauport, the Falls of Ste. Anne, Chaudiere Falls, Pointe Lévy, Grosse Isle, and other locations; the aurora borealis in Quebec, January 1837; as well as a view of Beloiel Mountain, Quebec, one of Rice Lake, north of Cobourg, Upper Canada, and one of Washington, D.C. Some of these views were original compositions by Whitmore himself, but he is also known to have sketched with and copied works by other artistically talented officers stationed in Quebec at the same time, including Charles Wright, Phillip John Bainbrigge, Henry Frances Ainslie, James Hope-Wallace, Charles P. Wilbraham, and Henry Barnard. His works in turn may have been copied by Millicent Mary Chaplin and Fanny Bayfield, among others.

Custodial history:

Album of watercolours and a carte-de-visite portrait presumed to be of George St. Vincent Whitmore, both acquired from a family descendant in Cheltenham, England; 2 watercolours acquired at auction from an unknown source; 1 watercolour acquired at auction from the Earl of Gosford's estate; 24 watercolours acquired from the William H. Coverdale family who acquired them from dealer Percy Godenrath, who acquired them from an unknown English source.

24 watercolours originally attributed to Unknown Artist "B" and acquired as part of the William H. Coverdale Collection of Canadiana (acc. nos. 1970-188-1035 to 1970-188-1059) were re-attributed to George St. Vincent Whitmore in 1989 by Eva Major-Marothy.

2 watercolours originally attributed to Phillip John Bainbrgge, and acquired at auction in 1996 (acc. nos. 1996-94-1 and 1996-94-2) were reattributed to George St. Vincent Whitmore by Dr. Kamille Parkinson in February 2006.

1 watercolour acquired at a Sothebys (London) auction in November 1987 from the estate of the Earl of Gosford (acc. no. 1988-10-5) is part of the Whitmore fonds.

Plans drawn by Captain Whitmore are held as part of the Cartographic, Architectural and Geomatic Archives, with copies available in the Whitmore artist file 705-2557 in the Art and Photo section.
