MANNERS OF DYING is a feature drama based on a short story by the author Yann Martel. The story concerns Kevin Barlow, a man sentenced to death by lethal injection, and Parlington, his weary but moral prison warden. The sentence is to be videotaped as proof and insurance that all procedures were followed correctly. Kevin's last request is to have a copy of the tapes documenting the entire procedure leading up to his death sent to his mother. Since nothing in the regulations deals with such an unusual and bizarre request, it is Parlington who has discretionary power to grant or refuse Kevin's wish. The film is not constructed as a chronological, linear narrative. Instead, a number of variations on the same story of dealing with life in the face of death are presented. They explore different possibilities of Kevin's last hours, switching from resignation to defiance, from delusion to revelation, from deception to dignity. The final night becomes a mosaic of manners of dying. Throughout the film, we hear Parlington's voice-over as he dictates a letter to Kevin's mother. As the radically different versions of the prisoner's final hours are laid out in flashbacks, it is not clear until the end what the warden actually says in his letter. The film does not provide a strong point of view on the Capital punishment, but rather asks us to think how we would face our death if we had just a few hours to live before we were strapped to a board and pumped full of lethal drugs in a claustrophobic execution chamber? Would we go with quiet dignity? Begging for mercy? Or, would we display an act of ultimate defiance? <1h 43mn 25s>
