Inscribed, in ink, top: Monotropa Uniflora. Death flower. / This melancholy looking flower, with so melancholy a name, grows / singly, one flower, from one root. It exhibits its heavy drooping bell, and shrouded stem, all of ghastly white, in dark Woods, and draws its nu=/=triment from decayed and mouldering timber.
