This sub-series documents SOPF involvement in the financing of the recovery of the oil barge IRVING WHALE. On 5 September 1970, the Canadian registered oil barge IRVING WHALE left Halifax (Canada) loaded with 4,270 tonnes of heavy fuel oil. Two day later, IRVING WHALE sank in approximately 67 metres of water in the Gulf of St Lawrence, provoking an heavy fuel oil release which made a 400 km2 oil slick. In 1991, it was determined that there were still over 3,000 tonnes of oil on board. After studies and debates, the Canadian Government raised the barge in 1996. Preparations and refloating operation in 1995-1996 amounted to $ 42 million.
