Only two generations ago, Inuit lived in little nomadic hunting camps scattered across the great Arctic landscape. Since the 1950s, their traditional lifestyle has undergone a significant transformation from Stone Age to Information Age, as Inuit first relocated, often by force, to government-operated settlements, and, more recently, beyond the settlement into southern cities. QALLUNAJATUT (URBAN INUK) is a documentary that explores the problem of Inuk dislocations from their traditional Arctic homelands, cornerstones of their culture, history, and traditional social structure. The film deals with the urbanization of the Inuit psyche, as Inuit increasingly move away from a direct connection to the land that has sustained their culture for thousands of years. QALLUNAJATUT provides a unique and emotional perspective on problems facing those who want to live Inuit lives in Canadian contemporary / modern urban environments. The film follows the lives of three Inuit in Montreal, Québec, over the course of one summer. First, we meet Jayson Kunnuk and his friend Charlie Adams, a renowned Nunavik singer/songwriter. They are both homeless and spend their days on the streets of Montreal. There, they meet Pitsulala Lyta, an Inuk outreach worker for the Native Friendship Centre. Originally from Iqaluit, Pitsulala came to Montreal at the age of 17. Even though she lived on the street for many years, she has managed to turn her life around and is now devoted to helping homeless Inuit get their bearings in the city. <46mn 13s>
