Description:

Interview held at the Colegio Madrid in Mexico City. Recording begins with a few words from an unnamed male teacher who discusses Belkin’s mural. Recording continues with an interview of Laura Llorens, a high school teacher at the Colegio Madrid. Her school, built by the Mexican government for children of refugees from the Spanish Civil War, houses one of Belkin’s murals entitled "Identify and Future". Llorens discusses the purpose of the mural; what the painting represents; the students’ response to the mural; and her memories of Belkin. <9mn 33s>

1. Interview was recorded as part of research for the radio documentary entitled ARNOLD BELKIN: THE CANADIAN SON OF MEXICAN MURALISM, produced by Bob Carty for the CBC and featured on CBC's THIS MORNING.~2. Interview with Llorens begins 48 minutes and 30 seconds into Tape 50, and is preceded by an interview with Alfonso de Maria y Campos for the same documentary report. See ISN 382370 for description of interview with Campos.~3. Interview with Llorens is followed by recording of several short interviews, conducted in Spanish by Carty, as background research for the above documentary report. Recording also contains pre-mix sound elements including various sound effects, the television news, and what appears to be a ceremony and celebration with fireworks and a band. ~4. Interview with unnamed male teacher conducted in English. Interview with Llorens conducted in Spanish.
