Item consists of a portrait of Canadian art historian and civil servant Dr. Jean Sutherland Boggs, CC, Ph.D., FRSC (b. 1922, Negritos, Peru), by Montreal artist and designer Allan Harrison (1911-1988). This portrait dates from the time Jean Boggs was working with Arthur Lismer at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts Art classes.

Harrison, Allan, 1911-1988 : Allan Harrison was a Montreal artist and designer, who was a member of the Contemporary Art Society of Montreal. His works are in numerous Canadian collections such as the Montreal Museum of fine Arts, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the Agnes Etherington, and others.

Boggs, Jean Sutherland, 1922- : Dr. Jean Sutherland Boggs was the fifth director of the National Gallery of Canada from 1966 to 1976 appointed by Lester Pearson . She was the first woman to occupy the position and the first director with a doctorate in fine arts. According to the NGC Library & Archives exhibition entitled The Sixties at the National Gallery of Canada (Jan-Apr 2005) "She quickly established the National Gallery's visibility and credibility - nationally and internationally - setting professional standards that the institution has striven to maintain ever since."

Upon leaving the National Gallery in 1976, she became Director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, from 1979 to 1982. She was then made chair and chief executive officer (by Pierre Trudeau) of the Canadian Museums Construction Corporation and oversaw the construction of both the National Gallery and the Canadian Museum of Civilization. She was also a scholar and published several books on the French artist Edgar Degas. She was promoted to Companion of the Order of Canada in 1992 and has received several honorary degrees.
