Series consists of records of various executive officers within the Presidential Office of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC). Specifically, series consists of records from Gordon M. MacNabb (NSERC President, 1978-1986), Dr. Arthur W. May (NSERC President, 1986-1990) and Dr. Peter Morand (NSERC President, 1990-1995). Also includes records from Dr. Giles Julien (NSERC Executive Director [ca. 1978-1986], Executive Director and Treasurer [ca. 1986-1989], Executive Vice-President, Treasurer and Acting Director General of Research Grants [ca. 1990-1991]). Also includes some files created by administrative staff within the presidential office.

From Gordon M. MacNabb, series includes 0.3 metre of chronological correspondence.

From Dr. Arthur W. May, series includes approximately 6.6 metres of textual records including committee meeting minutes (including Management Committee Meetings), meeting proceedings, correspondence (including ministerial), records of visits to universities, reports, and subject files regarding meetings, visits, and seminars.

From Dr. Peter Morand, series includes approximately 0.15 metre of files documenting visits to Canadian universities.

From Dr. Giles Julien, series includes 3.6 metres of textual records such as committee meeting proceedings (including Management Committee Meetings), subject files (regarding meetings, visits, seminars, etc.), and chronological correspondence.

The received order of the files has been maintained to date. No further arrangement of the records has yet been undertaken. The records were roughly grouped by creator, although it appears that some boxes were mistakenly attributed to the wrong creator. Amendments to the finding aid help clarify the correct provenance. Also, these records seem to have been created and maintained outside of any corporate recordkeeping system that was in place at NSERC, as they lack any systematic file numbering.

Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. Office of the President : The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada is governed by a Council (or Board of Directors) headed by a President and otherwise consisting of 21 members selected from industry, universities and the private non-profit sector.

In addition to a President and Vice-President, the Officers of the Council typically have included an Executive Director, Directors of Programs or Research, Director of Finance and Administration and Treasurer, and a Secretary.

The Executive Committee of Council, on which the President and other officers serve, is responsible for the functions of Council between Council meetings and acts as a planning, allocations, internal audit, and personnel committee.
