The National Postal Museum was officially opened on 27 September 1974. As part of its overall mandate and commitment to the development of philately, the National Postal Museum maintained philatelic items, tools, equipment, a research library, and the national stamp collection.
This accession consists of research files used to answer enquiries and in conjunction with in-house research projects. They also document the context of acquisition of records or books by the National Postal Museum.
Similar records can also be found in other series within RG3, specifically Series C, registry, 1851-1976, and Series F.2, Public Affairs, c.1960.
Some of the various subjects covered by these records include a project for cataloguing photographs, an index of "Transportation Branch Filing System", a copy of "Records Retention and Disposal Schedule" of Canada Post dated 1965, an Index of "Administration Branch, Postal Rates and Classification" and two volumes of indices for the "Engineering Branch". There is also information on Postal Information Booklet, a draft and correction of the bulletin "Communication" in the seventies, a ceremony for launching of new stamps, including a speech by the Postmaster general, the MAPP (Major Postal Plants Program) for the Montreal Metropolitain area (1972), publicity, proposed stamp programs, a philatelic exhibition at Munich in 1973, the money order system, Universal Postal Union Centenary, news releases, research files about the Pacific Cable, Post Office by province, stamp cancellations. Box 4 contains binders about Post Office History. The binders, from letters A to H, include information in alphabetical order by the name of the Post Office. The majority of the information is also in the historical cards (see Mikan 164751) but there are some interesting additions.
