Fonds consists of records created and/or maintained by the Canadian Council on Rural Development and its predecessors. The records of the CCRD include files on the organization and mandate of Council, statements of activity, work programmes, general correspondence and progress reviews; records of meetings of the Council, Executive Committee and Ad Hoc Committee Groups, including minutes, agenda, correspondence, briefs, budgets and reports; and committee files on such diverse subjects as regional development, tourism and recreation, movement of population, the role of women in rural development, local development associations, and manpower policies. In addition, the records document seminars, workshops, database projects, research studies, the interaction of CCRD with related organizations and the work of consultants., The fonds also includes 97 photographs, which were part of RG124, vol. 108, file 561-1, and which include portraits and group photos of members of the CCRD taken during the Seminar held at L'Institut Coopératif Desjardins, Lévis, Que. in Sept. 1971; meeting of the Executive Committee of the CCRD; and views and scenes of community life taken while representatives from CCRD visited Fogo Island, Newfoundland.

Canadian Council on Rural Development : The Canadian Council on Rural Development (CCRD) was created in 1965 and was administered by the Department of Forestry and Rural Development. Its legal mandate derived from the Agricultural and Rural Development Act (ARDA) of 1966-67. The council had no political power; rather, it served in an advisory capacity for the Minister. CCRD had five main functions: considering questions referred to it by the Minister; providing a forum for the expression of views, comments and suggestions by national organizations; facilitating consultation between the Minister and leading experts in rural development; ensuring continuity and coherence in Canada's long-term rural development policy; and, facilitating public understanding of Canada's rural development program. There were no members of the government at any level on the council. Half the council was made up of designated representatives of associations and organizations interested in rural development. The other half consisted of experts appointed by the Minister. In 1969, responsibility for the council shifted to the newly created Department of Regional Economic Expansion. The council was disbanded in 1979 following budgetary cuts at DREE.
