The sub-series comprises historical photographs of the Powell family and inter-married families in the 19th century and early 20th century. The emphasis is on the immediate family of Robert M. Powell's parents, Montagu Grant Powell and Aurelia Hughson. These include a large panorama photograph showing Robert Powell as a member of the Trinity College School rugby team in 1930 (vol. 13), a portrait of the school's Oxford Cup cross-country running team, and portraits of him in his Royal Military College and Royal Canadian Navy uniforms (file 7-1). But the earlier families of Dr. Robert H. W. Powell and Elizabeth Torrance, and Grant Powell and Elizabeth Mary Hurd are also well represented in the sub-series, which includes a number of cabinet cards of these individuals (file 7-3). Most of these portraits were by the Jarvis and Topley studios of Ottawa and the William Notman studio of Montreal. An early item in this file is a carte de visite of William Dummer Powell, MD and his wife Alice Murray of Guelph by Notman, ca. 1860. The earliest items are the four cased photographs (vol. 10). There are daguerreotypes of Mr. Grant Powell as an adult [ca. 1850s] and an unidentified young girl [ca. 1840s], possibly a daughter or sister of Elizabeth Mary Hurd. There are also two cased ambrotypes of Elizabeth Mary Powell (nee Hurd) as a young woman [ca. 1850s].

Inter-married family names represented in the sub-series include Torrance, Cassels, Hurd, and Seymour, among others. Some of these portrait subjects include John Andrew Torrance and Elizabeth Torrance. There are also cabinet cards of Miss Jane Seymour and Mrs. Ann Jane (Powell) Seymour, ca. 1876-1880, by Notman and Sandham.
